A 16-year-old girl studying first PUC has committed suicide after being mentally and physically abused by her aunt and uncle to return property documents which was willed in her name. The two accused are alleged to have been speaking ill about her character. The two had initially asked her mother to return the will. The girl, identified as S Manasa, was targeted when the mother delayed in returning the will. The accused started troubling her assuming that her death will result in the will to become null and void. The girl reportedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her house in Machohalli. Her mother has filed a complaint with the MN Halli police against the uncle and aunt, and two others for abetting her daughter to commit suicide. The victim was studying at a private college near Kamakshipalya.
S Manasa is a resident of Machohalli in Bengaluru North taluk, off the Bengaluru-Tumakuru main road. The incident took place between 8.30 pm and 8.40 pm on Sunday. A police complaint has been registered against the victim’s uncle Manjunath, aunt Rajalakshmi and two others.
Bhagyalakshmi works as an office coordinator at a private school located on the Bannerghatta Road. She stayed with her daughter earlier near the school. She married her husband, G Srinivas, around 17 years ago. He is said to have deserted her. The complainant’s father-in-law Gopala Krishna is an ex-serviceman who had some property in his name. Around five years ago, he wrote a will that gave ownership of the property to his granddaughter, Manasa. After Bhagyalakshmi’s husband left her, Krishna asked her to stay in one of the houses which were in Manasa’s name.
“After the mother and daughter came to the house in Machohalli, they reportedly started having trouble from their relatives Manjunath and Rajalakshmi. The two accused wanted a share in the property and started harassing the victim to return the will. The mother and daughter were also asked to stay in another house, separately. In the absence of Bhagyalakshmi, the two accused are alleged to started the mental and physical abuse. They forced her to commit suicide by saying that it is better if she dies rather than live as a characterless girl. Upset over the harassment, the victim had informed this to her mother,” said an officer on part of investigations.
Along with the two accused, the mother has also levelled allegations against another relative and a neighbour. The role of those two is being ascertained
After she complained to her mother, the two accused got to know about it. They assaulted the minor for complaining about them. Upset over the harassment and humiliation, the victim locked herself in the room and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling.
“When there was no response from her, the complainant, with the help of a few neighbours, entered the room and shifted the victim to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. The post-mortem was conducted at the Nelamangala government hospital. Along with the two accused, Bhagyalakshmi has also leveled allegations against another relative and a neighbour. The role of those two is being ascertained,” the officer added.
The police further added that the case is under investigation and a few of the accused have been arrested and have been remanded to judicial custody. The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code against the four accused.
